Eclectic film-makers, Emmett & Brendan Malloy, hail from California where their first forays into film began in their natural playground, the surf of the Pacific Ocean. After shooting a clutch of now cult-status surfing features including the acclaimed ‘Thicker Than Water’, the brothers found their interest leaning towards the world of music. They rapidly established their legitimacy as video directors, helming promos for the likes of Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, Goldfrapp & The Kooks.
Recently, however, they have been exploring more inventive forms of music video with perhaps most notably the Oasis ‘Dig Your Soul In The Streets’ collaboration with BBH, New York. The integrated docu-promo was a unique experiment in hybrid marketing and amongst other accolades won a Titanium Lion at Cannes.
Although respectably impossible to pigeon-hole, The Malloys enjoy a reputation for outré concepts, often tinged with irony and shot with a knowing comic wink. Their peculiar blend of the serious and the silly makes for a contagious mix – nowhere more evident than their recent Nike Jordan spot for W&K New York and their promos for Jack Johnson featuring Ben Stiller and Andy Samberg.
